Changanachery

Changanachery - one among four municipalities of Kottayam district is bounded on South by Paippad, North by Vazhappally, East by Thrikkodithanam-Madappally and West by Paippad-Vazhapally panchayats. Changanachery situated on Latitude 9 degree N and Longitude 76 degree E, is 6o kms North of Quilon and about the same distance from Cochin, on rising ground washed by the Eastern borders of Kuttanadu Delta, which is one of the few areas on earth below sea level.

Muncipal Office, ChenganacherryChanganachery has an area of 13.50 sq. kmtrs. This town is divided into 32 wards for easy administration. The population of the municiplaity is around 56000. The Municipal office is situated at very heart of Changanachery, by the side of the Main Central Road (MC Road). Within the confines of this Municipality, there are 23 co-operative establishments actively at work in Changacherry. The emblem of the Municiplity is the combined picture of Hindu, Christian, Muslim worship places.  
Changanachery is a centre of Christian influence, and possesses one of the grandest syro-Roman church in Kerala. The town is noted for the market, the best attended in all North Travancore and is held twice a week, and vigourous trade is in rice, pepper, dry ginger and arecanuts goes on.
The strategic location of the town plays an important role in its economic growth. Business in the town has grown with traders coming from Alapuzha, Vazhoor and Kottayam. Main business transactions includes agriculture products and consumer goods.

The K.S.R.T.C Depot, two municipal bus-stands, Boat Jetty , railways stations and three major bridges connecting different places helps to spread the business transactions. The prosperity of Changanachery can be seen from its various multi-storied building, increasing numbers of automobiles, Jewelers, departmental stores and the high standard of lifeof the people.
The Town Improvement Committee of Changanachery was formed in 1891. On 14th of August 1920, the place became a Municipality. The Municipal Chariman and Counsellors were selected by the people of the town, Fr. Dominic Tottasserri was the first Municipal Chairman of the Changanachery.
